You've probably made this promise before.
This time will be different.
- — The journal.
- — The gym.
- — The business.
- — The morning routine.
The promise to yourself that things would finally change.
And for a while… they did.
You woke up earlier. You showed up. You felt momentum.
Then, quietly… something shifted.
Not all at once. One skipped day. One excuse that seemed reasonable. One promise moved to tomorrow.
Before long, you found yourself standing somewhere strangely familiar.
Back at the beginning. Again.
If you've ever caught yourself asking, "Why do I always do this?" — you're not alone.
In fact… I'd argue you're asking the wrong question.
Most people assume this cycle says something about their character. That they're lazy. Undisciplined. Inconsistent. Broken.
But what if none of those explanations are true?
What if you've been trying to solve the wrong problem all along?
The version of you making the plan isn't always the version making tomorrow's decisions.
People rarely behave according to who they hope to become. They behave according to who they currently believe they are.
FIG. II — INTERIOR, UNDATED · The page is not the plan. The page is the evidence.
Tomorrow I'll introduce the concept that quietly changed the way I think about human behaviour forever. I call it… The Default Self.
For now, I only want you to consider one question.
What have your recent decisions been teaching you about yourself?
Because every decision leaves something behind. Not success. Not failure. Evidence.
And evidence has a strange way of becoming belief.
Until tomorrow,
Joseph

If this email felt uncomfortably familiar… that's probably because it wasn't written to motivate you. It was written to recognise you.
